How to Reach Taj Mahal | Print |  E-mail

Taj Mahal is the monument which is located on the south-east direction of Agra. We can reach the monument in various ways. Travelling from cities like New Delhi, Jaipur, Mathura, Mumbai can be done by railways, airways and roadways. You can also have your own vehicle for the same. After reaching Agra we can find it easy to move towards the Taj Mahal by hiring an auto-rikshaw, bi-cycle rikshaw and air conditioned taxis to move from the railway stations, airport or bus stand to the Taj Mahal or the desired place to stay.


Location of the Taj Mahal: The Taj Mahal lies on the south-east side of the city Agra. Taj Mahal is located on the banks of the River Yamuna (Jamuna) in the city of Agra, India. Agra is the city on the western side of the state Uttar Pradesh of the country India. The city is famous for many monuments. Uttar Pradesh is the northern state in India. The Taj Mahal is 253 kilometers from New Delhi, the capital of India. We can reach by train, roadways and airways to the Agra city. You can easily make a tour to the Taj Mahal after you reach the city of the Taj.


New Delhi to Agra: If we travel from New Delhi to Agra then the journey is around 3-4 hours by train, 1 hour by airways and 5 hours by roadways. There are around 26 trains (including fast and passengers) from New Delhi to Agra. Generally, the trains coming from New Delhi stop at Agra Cantonment (Cantt) station. If you are travelling by train from New Delhi to Agra then you can get down at Agra Cantt Railway Station and move towards your booked hotels. You can also directly move to see the Taj Mahal. At the Agra Cantt Railway Station we can find bi-cycle rikshaw, autorikshaw or an air conditioned taxi to drop you to the desired location. How to reach Agra by Train:
There are 4 railway stations in Agra.  Agra Cantonment (Cantt) is the main railway station. Distance and time from various destinations to Agra stations is given below.

How to reach Agra by Air: Agra has a single domestic airport at Kheria. This Kheria airport is 3 Kms away from the Idgah Agra Bus Terminal and 7 Kms away from the heart of the city.

How to reach Agra by Roadways:
The 3 main bus terminals in Agra are Idgah Agra Bus Stand, Bijlighar Bus Stand and New Bus Stand at Transport Nagar (TP Nagar). The Idgah Bus Stand is for the intercity travel in the heart of the city, the Bijlighar Bus Stand is near the Red Fort and the New Bus Stand is only for the state’s bus services for U.P. roadways. We can travel in U.P. roadways to reach Agra Bus Stand from any other states in India.

Purani Mani 0 mts Purani Mandi Chowk or Square is the area where the diesel and petrol vehicles are limited. The battery operated, bi-cycle rikshaws or animal driven vehicles will take you further to the western gate of Taj Mahal. On the left hand side you can see the Shah Jahan Park.
Fatehabad Road 500 mts 500mts from Purani Mandi. All the major hotels, restaurants,low and high budget hotels are located on this road. This road is the main area of stay for the tourists. Various handicraft shops are available here.
Parking area 1 km Battery operated vehicles will take you further from the parking area to the western gate of the Taj Mahal.
Taj Ganj 500 mts At walking distance towards southern gate (nearest area to the Taj). It is the old market area where restaurants and hotels of low budget are located.
Shilpgram 750 mts This is the area for booking the tickets for the Taj Mahal and battery operated vehicles for moving towards the Eastern Gate of the Taj Mahal. This place has parking area, Shiphaat (Daily fair of craft, cuisine and culture) and yearly festival of U.P. Tourism (Taj Mahotsav) is held here.

Local Means to reach Taj Mahal:
After you get down from the stations or airport or the bus stands in Agra, you can hire one of the following vehicles to reach the Taj Mahal or hotels and restaurants in Agra to make a stay or relax.

  • Auto-rickshaw: The yellow-green colored four wheeler drops you at your desired destination within Agra. The pre-paid auto-rickshaw is available at all the stations. One can hire the rikshaw from any other place in the city.
  • Cycle-rickshaw: These bi-cycle three wheelers are commonly used for travelling short distance from one part of the city to another.
  • Air-conditioned Taxis: These comfortable taxis can be found at the stations and the airport to drop you to the required hotel or directly to the Taj.


Transport within 500 mts of the Taj Mahal:
The polution free zone of the Taj Mahal is within the 500 mts where the local vehicles running on fuels like diesel, gas and petrol are banned. In such area there are other polution-free vehicles which can drop you from the parking areas to the gates of the Taj Mahal. The local means of transport can reach upto a certain area after which you can reach the gates of the Taj Mahal by one of the following means of transport:

  • Horse and Camel driven vehicles: Mostly found near the Taj Mahal for moving from the Taj to the nearby places and vice-versa.

  • Pollution-Free four wheelers: No diesel or petrol vehicle is allowed near the Taj Mahal. The battery- operated mini buses are the easiest means of travel near the Taj if you are in a large group.

  • Zero-Pollution three wheelers: These are other battery operated vehicles which are comfortable for travel if you have a small group or you are alone. These are 8 seater vehicles.
  • Air Conditioned Taxis: These are four wheeler and 13 seaters new battery operated vehicles running in the pollution free zone of the Taj Mahal.
  • Golf-Cart: These are new four wheelers which are 13 seater vehicles running around the Taj Mahal.
