The water channels can be seen in a straight canal starting from the main gate and ending at the base of the main mausoleum. There are fountains in the centre of these canals along with a pond at the central raised platform in the char-bagh. A square shaped water channel runs on all the sides of the central platform which has four fountains in the center of the canal. There are water channels from the center of the Charbagh to the museum; however, these channels are not filled with water in these days.
The Complex infrastructure of water supply: Water supply was done is a complex infrastructure. Water was drawn from the river Yamuna with the help of bullocks and ropes with buckets. The water was stored in a large tank with a high level and was distributed to other lower tanks above the ground level. The water passed into three subsidiary tanks and then it was piped into the Taj Mahal complex. The main pools of the Taj complex where filled with the water flowing through the earthenware pipes. The pipes are 25cm in diameter and they lie 1.5m below the surface in a line along with the pathway. Subsidiary channels were filled to water the entire garden.
Equal water pressure generated: Equal amount of pressure was generated so that the water in the fountains may rise up uniformly. All the fountains have same distance between them and are of equal height. A cooper pot was provided below each fountain where the water was collected first and then it rose up from the fountains due to pressure generated after the flowing of water from the tanks. The pipe for the fountains is 9 inches in diameter and has been embedded in masonry at a depth of 5 feet below the level of the pathway.
Canals in the Taj Garden: There are four main canals for storing the water. The canal infront of the main mausoleum get the reflection the white marbled mausoleum while the canal towards the main gate gets the reflection of the main gate in the water. These canals are towards the north and the south of the Taj complex respectively. They also have the fountains which start after the sunrise. Apart from this, there are two other canals towards the museum and the music mansion which are not filled with water. However, during the Mughal period these were surely filled with water to enhance the beauty of the Taj and to supply water to the charbagh.
