Mughal Gardens in Agra

Mughal Gardens in Agra India are known for their charbagh style of gardening. They all show the Persian style of gardening architecture. There is no monument in Agra without a Mughal garden due to which the number of such gardens is high. It is always good to see the monument along with its beautiful green garden which has helped maintain the surrundings around the great wonders of Agra. In India, there are many Mughal gardens, however, when you visit the Taj Mahal, please do see the charbagh style of gardening in the monument of love. 

 

History of Mughal Gardens: One would see the Mughal gardens in all the Mughal architectural buildings and constructions. Gardens played a very important role in the Islamic culture. Babur's Aram Bagh was the first Mughal garden constructed in India and since then the charbagh style of gardening continued in the country. All the gardens were renovated in order to maintain them.
 

Architecture of Mughal gardens: Mughal gardens were identified by their charbagh style of gardening. Four quartered gardening style was known as the charbagh style. Such gardens were initially seen by Babur in Kabul and then the same method of construction was used in India for constructing the gardens. These gardens were walled gardens with water canals, pathways, water tanks and four quartered gardens associated in the same area. This was the Persian style of gardening.
 

Mughal Gardens in Agra: Many gardens in Agra are constructed by the Mughals during their reign starting from 1500s. Here are a few Mughal gardens found in Agra which are still maintained by the tourist department of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.

  • Mehtab Bagh: Mehtab Bagh (Garden) is located on the left bank of the river Yamuna in Agra, India and is opposite to the Taj Mahal. The garden complex is a huge square measuring around 300 meters by 300 meters. It is in straight alignment with the Taj Mahal. The name Mehtab Bagh means “The Moonlit Garden”.   • Taj Garden or Charbagh: The Taj Mahal has one of the largest Persian gardens of the world. It is called the Charbagh. Charbagh is the gardening style where the garden is divided into four quarters and these four quarters are further divided into the smaller quarters by broad causeways.   • Babur’s Aram Bagh: Aram Bagh also known as Bagh-I-Gul Afshan meaning ‘the Flower-Scattering Garden’ was originally founded by the first Mughal Emperor, Babur. He laid this garden in 1526 A.D on the Persian terraced and Charbagh meaning ‘four-quartered’ plan. This is the first Mughal garden with this type of architecture. He constructed this garden after he saw such gardens at Samarqand. The garden was later on known by the name of Ram Bagh when the Marathas occupied Agra during 1775 A.D to 1803 A.D. Read More
