9 Gems of Akbar

The 9 gems of Akbar were known for their great role during Akbar's reign. These precious jewels included the prime minister, poet, musician, grand prime minister, finance minister, army general and chief advisors. The nine gems were the trusted and talented ministers of Akbar's court. 

9 gems of Akbar are listed below:

  1. Shaikh Abu al-Fazl ibn Mubarak (Prime Minister): Shaikh Abu al-Fazl ibn Mubarak was the author of the Akbarnama, the history of Akbar's reign in three volumes. The third volume is famous as the Ain-i-Akbari. He occupied the prestigious and responsible position in the court as the vizier of the Emperor Akbar. He translated the Bible into Persian. He was the brother of Faizi, the poet laureate in the court of Emperor Akbar. Read more
  2. Abu al Faizi (Poet Laurate): Abu al Faizi was the poet laureate of Emperor Akbar's Court. He was the brother of Abu al Fazl. He wrote beautiful poetry in Persian and is credited nearly 100 poetic works. Akbar well aware of the genius in him and appointed him as a teacher for his son. Akbar gave him a place among his 'Nav Ratnas'. Read more
  3. Miyan Tansen (Musician):  Tansen is considered as one of the greatest musicians ever. He was the chief musician in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar. He was one of the “Navaratnas” (nine jewels) in the court of Akbar. Akbar gave him the title “Miyan” meaning “learned” as Tansen used to show magical qualities of music. Just by singing in particular ragas he used to bring rain and light up fire etc. He was a great composer and singer. Read more
  4. Birbal (Grand Prime Minister): Birbal, whose real name was Maheshdas Bhat, was the Chief Minister (Wazir-e Azam) of the Mughal court in the administration of the Emperor Akbar.  He was one of Emperor’s most trusted members along with being a part of Akbar's nine advisors, known as the 'navaratnas', meaning 'nine jewels'. He was the only Hindu who was a 'Din-i-Ilahi' believer, a new religion created by the Emperor Akbar. Read more
  5. Raja Todar Mal (Finance Minister): Raja Todar Mal was the Finance Minister in Akbar's court. Raja Todar Mal revolutionized and changed the revenue system of Akbar's Mughal Empire. He was from the Khatri community of Punjab (some consider him to be belonging to Kayastha community). He was a Khatri and not a Kayastha is also supported by the fact (as found in his many paintings) that he wore a secrate thread, which is traditionally worn only by Bhahmins, Kshatriya and Kharis but not Kayasthas.   6. Raja Man Singh (Army General): Raja Shri Man Singh Ji Saheb (Man Singh I) was the Kacchwaha Rajah Saheb of Amber, a state later known as Jaipur. He was a trusted general of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, who included him among the Navaratnas, or the nine gems of the royal court. He was a devotee of Shri Krishna, and not a follower of Akbar's religion, Din-i-Ilahi. Read more

Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khana (Poet): Abdul Rahim Khan-e-Khana who is known as 'Rahim' was a composer or poet in the times of Mughal Emperor Akbar, and one of his main nine ministers in his court, also known as the Navaratnas. He is mostly known for his Hindi couplets and his books on Astrology. A Muslim by birth, Rahim was a devotee of Lord Krishna and wrote poetry dedicated to him. He was also an avid Astrolger and the writer if two important works in Astrology Khet Kautukam and Dwawishd Yogavali are still popular. Read more

  9. Mullah Do Piaza (Chief Advisors): Abul Hasan famously known as Mullah Do Piaza was one of Akbar's chief advisors. Akbar regarded his advice in high esteem and included him among the nine gems of the Mughal court. Mullah Do Piaza was known for his intelligence and was a close competition to Birbal. He is popularly known as Mulla Do-Piaza because of his liking of a dish known as `do-piaza`. Do-Piaza is made with mutton and onions. Read more
