Mughal Emperor Akbar

Jalauddin Mohammad Akbar was born on October 15, 1542 A.D. in the fort of Amarkot. He ascended the throne at the age of fourteen in 1556 A.D. after his father Humayun’s sudden death. Akbar is the Emperor who is the founder of the religion named Din-E-Ilahi. Let’s know more about this great and world famous Mughal Emperor.

Akbar's Rule over Agra: Akbar was declared the heir apparent of his family and he ascended the throne in 1556 A.D at Kalanoor under the guidance of his teacher and general Bairam Khan. With his help Akbar defeated the Afghans in the famous battle of Panipat on 5th November 1556 A.D. In 1558 A.D Akbar reached Agra for the first time. Although, Agra was retained as a seat of their government by Babur and Humayun, the city reached the pinnacle of its political power, cultural heights and architectural glory during the reign of the Emperor Akbar.


In 1556 A.D he demolished the Badalgarh fort and reconstructed it to the 'Red Fort' or 'Agra Fort'. He also declared Agra to be his capital and with that idea he built many huge architectural buildings in this place. Later, he renamed Agra after his name as Akbarabad.
 

Characteristics of Akbar: The king, Akbar the Great, was keenly interested in art and architecture. The Mughal style of painting developed under his guidance, as a result of fusion of Hindi and Persian techniques. His architecture is characterized equally by a happy blending of the indigenous and Islamic modes of construction and ornamentation. Read more

New Religion – Din-E-Ilahi (‘Divine Faith’): Akbar propagated a new religion known as Din-E-Ilahi (‘Divine Faith’) which included all the good principles of all the religions. The history of this religion is well-known to many. Akbar, first time beheld the vision of ‘United India’, united in heart and spirit. In this he formulated a concrete scheme of cultural fusion of two main communities - The Hindus and the Muslims. He proclaimed his policy of ‘Sulah-I-Kul’ meaning ‘peace with all’. Last days of Akbar’s Life:
After a glorious reign of 50 years, the great Emperor died during the night of 25th - 26th October 1605 A.D. in Agra Fort. He died at the age of 63. Akbar had built the tomb for himself at Sikandara which is known as the

 

Important Timings in Akbar’s Life: Akbar’s tomb and is very famous in the city. After Akbar’s death the tomb was completed by his son Jahangir.
